Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the medication report a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like something flipping and you become starving," said an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
